Decks and outdoor living in Tauranga

Tauranga's climate is made for outdoor living, and a well-built deck is the cheapest extra room a house will ever get. Create Built builds decks and outdoor spaces that are structurally sound, properly flashed where they meet the house, and finished to the same standard as the interior, because you will spend as much time out there as in.

Outdoor work we build

  • Timber and composite decks, ground-level and elevated, with balustrades where required
  • Covered outdoor rooms with fixed roofs, louvres or pergolas
  • Deck-to-living transitions that bring the outside in, with new sliding or bifold doors
  • Fencing and privacy screens that add style, structure and street appeal
  • Retaining walls, steps and landscaping structures
  • Outdoor kitchens and fire features built into the deck
  • Pool surrounds and decking

Built for the Bay

Salt air at Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, wind exposure on the harbour edge, clay soils in Bethlehem and Pyes Pa. Each of these changes what fixings, footings and timber a deck should use. We build with stainless or hot-dip galvanised fixings where they are needed, footings to suit the ground and hardwood or composite boards chosen for how they weather, so the deck looks good in ten years, not just on handover day.

Fencing and privacy

A well-built fence adds more than security. It adds style, structure and street appeal. We custom-build fencing solutions that complement your home and landscaping: vertical batten screens, horizontal slat fences, solid boundary fences and gates, in timber, aluminium or a mix.

Consents for decks

A deck you cannot fall more than 1.5 metres from does not need a building consent; a higher one does. A veranda roof over a deck is usually exempt as well, up to 20 square metres. Building close to a boundary can need a resource consent, a safety barrier is required wherever the fall is a metre or more, and a pool fence always needs a consent. The government's Building Performance site has a guide to checking if you need consents. We will tell you what applies and take care of it.

Questions about decks and outdoor work

Timber or composite decking?

Timber, usually a hardwood like kwila or vitex, looks beautiful and can be refinished, but needs oiling. Composite needs almost no maintenance and holds its colour but costs more up front. Near the beach, composite or a durable hardwood is usually the better choice. We will show you both.

Do I need a consent for a deck in Tauranga?

It depends mainly on height. A deck you cannot fall more than 1.5 metres from does not need a building consent. A roof over it, or building close to a boundary, brings in other rules. We check what applies on your section and apply for a consent if one is needed.

Can you add a roof or louvres over my existing deck?

Usually, yes, provided the existing structure can carry it, which we will check. A veranda roof of up to 20 square metres over a ground-floor deck usually needs no building consent, and in some cases up to 30. Anything larger is consented work and we will manage that.

Do you build fences on their own?

Yes. Fences, gates and privacy screens are a regular part of our work, whether as part of a bigger project or as a standalone job.
